blind item
A blind item is a news story, usually gossip, in which the details of the matter are reported while the identities of the people involved are not revealed. The invention of the blind item is credited to William d'Alton Mann (1829 – 1920), publisher of ''Town Topics'', who often used it for blackmail.〔http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,743014,00.html〕 A recent example of the blind item was when, in November 2015, actor Charlie Sheen was revealed as being HIV-positive. News articles on the subject initially did not mention the name of the subject of the article. Many people had guessed which actor was diagnosed with AIDS. In the end, it was revealed that Sheen was the mysterious subject of the article. However, Sheen was not newly diagnosed. In fact, the actor was diagnosed in 2011, over four years before the news story broke.
